Samoa House Library is an independent art library and alternative education platform, located in the Samoa House building at 283 Karangahape Road, Tāmaki Makarau, Auckland. It is an artist-run and community-grown space that first emerged in response to the closures of specialist libraries at The University of Auckland.

Position title: Research Librarian
Job status: 9 hours per week
Report to: SFAL Board of Trustees
Job purpose: The Research Librarian (RL) is responsible for the care, processing, and presentation of Samoa House Library collection. The collection includes a range of formats, books, ephemera, journals, zines, and more. The RL is responsible for sourcing and cataloguing all new acquisitions as well as soliciting donations. SHL’s acquisitions should reflect the research interests of those actively using the library space, wider creative concerns, recent local and international arts publishing, and subject gaps within our existing collection. The role facilitates access and engagement with the collection through managing library open hours, welcoming and supporting visitors, and responding to enquiries. The RL is also responsible for recruiting, coordinating, and training volunteer minders. The RL will be expected to develop initiatives to improve the usability, relevancy, and responsiveness of the collection.
Job context: Samoa House Library (SHL) is a browsable art library. We support research-based art practice by providing free and accessible resources for art practitioners.
SHL is registered as a charitable trust governed by a Board of Trustees, with the guidance and support of advisors from across Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa. Training and mentorship will be provided by SHL Board and advisors. Within the SHL staff team you will work closely alongside the SHL Kaitiaki / Operations Manager. The K/OM and RL will work collaboratively with one another to develop and realise Samoa House Library’s goals for 2025-2026, supporting each other in their respective roles. You will be expected to work onsite 2 days per week, allocation of hours to be determined through discussion with Kaitiaki/Operations manager. Prior experience in librarianship is not necessary, we welcome applications from those with an interest in valuing accessible resources, collection management and development as well as an enthusiasm to support research.
